On average we are now living longer than at

any time in history, but how well do we live?

The question we face is this:

“as we age, do we need to suffer the

common symptoms of ageing such as

frailty, dementia, and the increasing

incidence of disease and cancers?”

If you could help your body live longer and healthier - would

you do so? We believe that everyone wants this outcome.

We have long understood that people seem to age at different rates. There are many famous examples of people living in excess of 100 years, especially around the Mediterranean, in Japan and across Eastern Europe. We also understand that there are a variety of ‘contributors’ to the ageing process. These include poor diet / poor nutrition, overeating (calorie excess), lack of exercise, environmental and air pollution, exposure to excess UV from the Sun, poor water quality and irregular sleep patterns. If you look at the list above and take action to improve or optimise each item on this list in your own life, you will feel the benefits almost immediately, and you would no doubt succeed in slowing down your ageing ‘clock’. A nutritious diet, regular and appropriate exercise, clean air and water in our environment, regular sound sleep... if you were able to achieve all of these on a regular basis then supplementation would probably not be necessary. But what happens if you are not able to achieve all of these things? In that case a supplement that can support your body in its battle to maintain a state of peak health, and to slow the onset and severity of ageing, makes a lot of sense. In recent years the concept of slowing the ageing process has become a focus for clinical study and medicine, and it is from these studies which revealed the power of resveratrol to assist the body to reduce the effects of ageing, that LiXiR® has been formulated. LiXiR® contains a powerful combination of Grape Skin Extract and Resveratrol. Resveratrol is a natural substance found in a variety of plants. Resveratrol can also be ‘manufactured’ artificially. The most common natural sources of resveratrol are red wine grapes and Japanese knot weed (Polygonum Cuspidatum). The news about Resveratrol is very encouraging. We have long understood that health benefits seem to be asociated with moderate consumption of red wine. Now the science indicates that this is due to the Resveratrol content of the wine. Resveratrol has also been credited with acting as a powerful anti-oxidant. There are a number of ways that have been identified through which Resveratrol works within the body to boost the bodies natural defences and help slow down the progress of disease, and the effects and degradation of ageing. Some of these actions are discussed below.

Can Resveratrol help lower Insulin & Inflammation?

Resveratrol helps prevent your body from creating sphingosine kinase and phospholipase D, two molecules known to trigger inflammation. While inflammation is a natural bodily response (it's a process in which your body's white blood cells protect you from outside invaders such as bacteria and viruses), it is also possible for your body to exist in a chronically inflamed state. Chronic inflammation has been linked to numerous chronic diseases including heart disease. Resveratrol seems to produce many benefits similar to those you get from exercise, including lowering insulin levels, which is a key to fighting disease and staying young. Insulin resistance speeds up the aging process, while keeping insulin level resistance normal has the opposite effect. Sirtris Pharmaceuticals has, in fact, already developed a resveratrol pill that was used in a trial on people with untreated diabetes. The results? Lowered glucose and insulin levels without any changes in diet or taking other drugs. It is not recommended that that you replace a healthy diet, medication, or exercise program with resveratrol, but the research suggests it is a powerful addition to a healthy lifestyle. Remember, too, that resveratrol is a potent antioxidant, and antioxidants help to protect your cells from free radical damage and ageing.

Can Resveratrol help us live longer?

Scientists first tested this hypothesis on yeast, and it was found that yeast life expectancy was increased by upwards of 70%.Though compelling, there is an enormous jump from yeast to mammals, so the scientific community waited with anticipation until a study was released in late 2006 by the Harvard Medical School that resveratrol was also found to extend the life of mice by an average of 30% - and this was with mice that were not young to begin with! To explore these results further more studies were undertaken. In a study published in the journal Nature, scientists tested two groups of mice. One group of mice was fed a high-fat diet consisting of 60 percent fat calories. These mice developed signs of incipient diabetes, and began dying early. A second group of mice was fed an identical diet, but were also given large daily doses of resveratrol (the equivalent, for a human, of the amount that would be found in 750 to 1,500 bottles of red wine). LiXiR® is similarly concentrated. The second group of mice also gained weight, but their organs remained healthy, they avoided the enlarged livers and high blood glucose and insulin that signal diabetes. The resveratrol-fed mice lived as long as mice on a healthy diet, while consuming 60 percent fat calories. Imagine the effect of combining Resveratrol, a healthy diet and moderate regular exercise? The potential for improvements to health and lifespan are truly inspiring. Needless to say research is continuing and further information will come to light as we understand more about how Resveratrol acts in the body.
